An oil field is an area with an abundance of oil wells, which are perforations through the Earth's surface designed to find and release both petroleum oil and gas from below ground. Oil fields can extend over a large area, possibly several hundred miles across, so in order to fully extract the oil reserves, multiple oil wells are scattered across the oil field.
